Split Screen Data
Split Screen Data is a publishing and consultancy company specialising in the international film industry.

UK Film Council
The UK Film Council is the lead agency for film in the UK. Set up by the Government, the organisation works with the public and private sector to ensure that the economic, cultural and educational aspects of film are effectively represented at home and abroad.

We invest Government grant-in-aid and Lottery money to deliver lasting benefits to the industry and the public alike by supporting:
  • talent - the development of new talent, skills, and creative and technological innovation in UK film and assisting new and established film-makers to produce successful and distinctive British films;
  • enterprise - the creation and growth of sustainable businesses in the film sector, providing access to finance and helping the UK film industry compete successfully in the domestic and global marketplace;
  • education- promoting an appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of cinema by giving UK audiences access to the widest range of UK and international cinema, and by supporting film culture and education.

MEDIA Plus Programme of the European Community
The MEDIA Programme entered into force in January 2001 and aims at strenghtening the competitiveness of the European audiovisual industry with a series of support measures dealing with:
  • the training of professionals;
  • the development of production projects and companies;
  • the distribution of cinematographic works and audiovisual programmes;
  • the promotion of cinematographic works and audiovisual programmes;
  • the support for cinematographic festivals.
Equipped with a budget of 400 million euro MEDIA brings support both before and after production. MEDIA co-finances training initiatives for audiovisual industry professionals, the development of production projects (feature films, television drama, documentaries, animation and new media), as well as the distribution and promotion of European audiovisual works.

Country of origin

In the current production climate, determining the country of origin of a European film is far from simple. We have, therefore, done our best to adopt two sets of criteria: one for UK films, and one for non-UK films. This approach may involve minor contradictions, but we consider that it best reflects the needs of the site's primary target audience: the UK film industry.

For UK films, the definition is that used by the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport under the Films Act (1985), which defines certain criteria in relation to the proportion of the budget spent in the UK and the proportion of labour costs paid to qualifying individuals. A film may also qualify if it satisfies the terms of a co-production treaty. For full details, see the DCMS website. (www.culture.gov.uk/creative/index.html).

For non-UK films, we have adopted the looser criterion of 'perceived nationality'. In most cases, this is the country supplying the largest portion of the production budget. In some cases, however - notably films from the developing world, part funded by, for example, France's Fonds Sud or made with the majority participation of a production company in another European state - the country in which the film is set and was filmed is taken as the country of origin.

If you consider a film listed on this site to have been allocated the wrong country of origin, please contact us.
